Overview

Passionate about communications and social media? Interested in raising awareness about the struggles of frontline indigenous communities in the Amazon through digital media? Amazon Frontlines is looking for an experienced, highly motivated and talented social media intern to support our international communications team in the Western Amazon. The ideal candidate is media-savvy with excellent communications skills, and motivated to engage with digital audiences to drive change and promote an urgent cause. This role will help to connect audiences, target influencers, stimulate debate around our campaigns and help drive support and engagement.

Interns will work directly with a staff member from our Communications team, but are expected to be self-motivated and creative. The Social Media internship requires a six-month minimum commitment and a minimum of 20-25 hours a week. While the Social Media intern role is a remote position, preference will be given to applicants based in time zones of the United States in order to best coordinate with our team in the Western Amazon. This is an unpaid position with the possibility of a stipend after a 3-month trial period.

Responsibilities

Social Media

  • Assist in drafting and creating original and engaging posts for our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Assist in creating graphics and designs for use across our social media channels using templates provided
  • Assist in responding to messages on social media accounts
  • Research, familiarize and thoroughly understand Amazon Frontline’s main campaigns, programs and relevant issues by reading previously created content and searching online content
  • Use analysis tools to monitor and analyze data for all social media accounts, and provide recommendations and insights for improving performance
  • Research, identify and maintain a database of key social media accounts (i.e. journalists, spokespeople, organizations, government officials, celebrities, potential ambassadors etc.) on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Write and edit factually correct content
  • Build social media following and increase engagement across our channels
  • Assist in driving traffic to our website and content by sharing timely content and identifying opportunities to re-share content
  • Keep up to date on cutting edge digital tools and technologies, and best social media practices; provide regular advice to Communications Team on these matters.

Operations

  • Assist in replying to incoming requests and enquiries from our organization’s generic email accounts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest (an active Twitter account is required)
  • Extensive experience and understanding of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  • Experience in PR, communications and/or journalism for a range of audiences
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Proven editorial judgement and flair, and an understanding of what makes news and what goes viral
  • Ability to distil complex ideas and issues into a digestible and accessible format
  • A great eye for design and photography, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively about messaging and image
  • Ability to master in short order Amazon Frontline’s voice and style
  • Keen analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Experience in data monitoring and analysis
  • Self starter able to work independently with little supervision
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Strong knowledge of and interest in environmental and human rights issues, especially indigenous rights, conservation, climate change and energy
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (PR, communications and journalism preferred)
  • Spanish proficiency is preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (in particular, Photoshop and InDesign)
