Overview

Amazon Frontlines is a U.S. 501c3 organization based in the Ecuadorian Amazon working alongside the indigenous organization Alianza Ceibo and the communities of four ancestral nations to advance indigenous rights and autonomy, protect indigenous rainforest territories and cultures, and conserve some of the most biodiverse rainforest on Earth and one of our planet’s greatest defenses against climate change.

We are looking to hire a passionate and committed individual with natural leadership skills and proven experience in nonprofit management. The ideal candidate will be capable of assuming a leadership role in a dynamic, multicultural and multidisciplinary environment in Ecuador’s northern Amazon. Working at the intersection of operations, human resources, finance and programs, the Managing Director will work closely with the Executive Director to support and ensure promote the well-being and effectiveness of our growing organization.

The ideal candidate will lead the implementation of internal systems, processes and policies focusing on people management, financial health and general administration, supporting the overall impact of the organization. He/she will also support the Executive Director with organizational growth and Ceibo’s directors with organizational development.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a strong commitment to social and environmental justice and substantial experience working with indigenous communities. Proven experience in nonprofit management / leadership is required. The person should have strong organizational skills and initiative (we’re looking for a go-getter!), superb attention to detail, and demonstrate proactive leadership. The ability to communicate (and listen!) effectively in multicultural setting is imperative. Fluency in Spanish and English is a must.

Location: Quito & Lago Agrio.
This is a full time position.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the annual budgeting and work-planning processes between Amazon Frontlines and the Ceibo Alliance.
  • Provide effective and inspiring operational leadership to the work of Amazon Frontlines by developing a broad and deep knowledge of all programs.
  • Support the Ceibo Alliance, our local partner organization, in building their administrative and management capacity (liasoning with Ceibo Leadership Team and Administrative Team).
  • Ensure Amazon Frontlines’ team is promoting the autonomy, independence and self-sufficiency of our partner organization, The Ceibo Alliance, in daily interactions, and in our institutional relationship
  • Support staff in budget-management decisions and activity prioritization.
  • Lead the development of organizational systems (workflows, decision-making processes, calendaring, communication channels) in coordination with the team in order to increase organizational well-being and effectiveness.
  • Oversee grants administration, including reporting (liasioning with program personnel, the development team, and Ceibo Alliance leadership)
  • Ensure the organizational accounting system provides reliable access to financial information and enables strategic budgeting (in coordination with finance officer and local accountant)
  • Ensure the ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems and infrastructure
  • Ensure organizational compliance, oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, leases and other legal documents and agreements (liasoning with legal team).
  • Lead hiring process for new employees, working with the team to identify capacity needs, build job descriptions and lead interviews when appropriate.
  • Responsible for maintaining employee files, and creating systems for tracking vacations, flexible time-off.
  • With Executive Director, lead annual staff performance evaluations and contract renewals.
  • Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence, including mentoring, coaching, and acting as a sounding board and resource.
