Description of work

Amazon Frontlines is seeking a proactive and committed Human Rights Defender and Junior Lawyer to join our Rights team. The selected candidate will develop and implement strategic litigation actions to promote indigenous rights and the protection of their territories in Ecuador, contributing to the defense of their territories, life and their physical and cultural survival in the Amazon jungle.

The Junior Lawyer – Paralegal will report directly to the team leader and will work closely with our indigenous partners to design, coordinate, and articulate legal strategies for Amazon Frontlines programs. The junior lawyer will also strengthen our organization’s collaboration with the Ecuadorian Human Rights Alliance, and with other relevant allied organizations and movements with whom we work with.

Amazon Frontlines is an organization whose mission is to support the autonomy of indigenous partners, and therefore the junior lawyer will be responsible for supporting the operational development of strategies that position indigenous struggles at the center of our work. She will play a key role in providing logistical and technical support for the development of legal strategies for our indigenous partners.

The Role (aka what you’ll do):

  • Investigation and research to search for relevant information for legal processes
  • Support with procedures and operational needs of the processes
  • Support with logistics for the development of activities
  • Accompany new processes or actions in conjunction with with Fundación Alianza Ceibo and support for existing processes
  • Support fundraising processes and grant management by writing proposals and reports as needed
  • Produce blogs and social media content as needed in coordination with the Rights team leader and Communications team leaders
  • Assist in the development of legal strategies
  • Support AF organizational processes as needed

Who you are and what you must have to be successful in the position:

  • Law professional with a valid professional card in Ecuador
  • Proven experience in the required legal field (2 years maximum)
  • Writing skills and document analysis
  • Previous experience providing legal assistance and community work
  • Availability to work full time and occasionally during weekends
  • Sensitivity and good predisposition to work in a team, under pressure and in multicultural contexts
  • Availability to travel to communities in the western Amazon
  • Availability to  change residence to Lago Agrio, Ecuador

Preferred Skills:

  • Proven experience working with grassroots social organizations and/or communities and/or victims of serious human rights violations
  • Knowledge of international standards for the protection of indigenous peoples and territories
  • Work in Human Rights and/or with PPII

Location:

Position based full time in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, with availability to travel to territories when necessary.
